chick eggs

On the first of May we started with 26 chick eggs.

We have been fortunate to have the help and support of our community egg expert, Lise-Anne, during this time. She worked with the children to candle our eggs twice. They found that only 18 of our eggs have chicks in them. Using a flashlight the children were able to observe the embryos develop over time.

The Kindergarteners have been making many connections across content areas thinking about chick eggs. We have read various books about eggs and chickens. They have explored sound words (crack, peck) and transitional words (first, then). They have counted by 2's and represented the numbers 26 and 18 in different ways.

They have been reflecting in their nature journals about seeds, eggs, and chicks.
They have also been solving story problems connected to chick eggs in their math journals!

They have engaged in the process of scientific questioning. We listed questions and wonderings we had about our eggs, thinking about what we could investigate or answer.

There was a shared curiosity in hatching order. We developed a question;

Which egg will hatch first? Why?

We made predictions;

The heaviest egg will hatch first, because it will topple over and the chick will hatch quickly.
The smallest egg will hatch first, because the chick inside is so big and needs to get out.
Egg number 26 will hatch first, because maybe the chicks will count down.

We studied our eggs and chose three eggs that we thought were the biggest, based on their size. We traced the eggs and measured their length and width using a ruler. Egg number 26 was the longest and widest egg.

We then chose the "smallest" egg based on which egg looked the smallest. We measured the length and width of egg number 12.

We think egg 26 is the heaviest, because it is the largest oval.
Egg number 21 and 22 are big, too!
Egg number 12 will be heavy, because even though it is a little egg we think it has a BIG chick inside ready to come out first!

Lise-Anne helped us weigh eggs number 26, 21, 22, and 12. We found that three of our eggs weighed the same, even though they were not the same length and width!

Our prediction is that the heaviest egg (egg number 26) will be one of the first to hatch.

Now we must pay close attention to the hatching order of our eggs!
