School Board Meeting
In the week before our April break three of our Kindergarten students presented their work and learning during a school board meeting. They used words, photographs, and modeling in their presentation. This was an opportunity for the children to advocate for the empowering work and rich learning their community is actively engaged in.
Thane presented his growth as a writer and illustrator using peer feedback to develop his drawing of a pizza. His drawing of a pizza was part of his instructional text during our How To Unit; How To Make a Pizza.
Maeve and Dylan presented the work our community has down developing student-written standards for turning and talking about books. They were the teachers and watched videos of themselves, using a critical eye to look for what was powerful and what they need to work on. The children were the teachers, developing their own teaching points. This story can be found in earlier posts on our blog.
Maeve and Dylan then modeled what a reading partnership looks and sounds like, sharing sticky notes in response to character feelings. They ended their presentation with an exit ticket for the audience.
Westford Fine Arts Night and Craft Fair
On Friday, May 3rd the Kindergarten students had a table at the Westford Craft Fair. This past week many of the children spent their academic choice time designing blank notecards to sell at the fair. We will discuss what to purchase for our Kindergarten Playground with the money the children raised. What they decide to purchase- tools or materials- will be used this year and also be a gift for our new Kindergarten students!
This joyful experience encouraged students to bravely interact with the community and practice their counting and cardinality skills using money! They had to add amounts together to figure out how much a customer needed to pay for their cards. They had to use subtraction to figure out how much they needed to give back to their customers. The children sold almost all of their beautiful cards.
We will count their earnings during our math workshop on Monday!
