On Friday we talked about the artist Henri Matisse and discussed the many different lines and shapes in his work. We read a book about Matisse and the children practiced cutting curvy, straight, and zig zag lines - covering their canvases in colorful shapes. This work connects to their learning about letters as different kinds of lines and their work with flat shapes during our math workshop.
This creative experience provided a meaningful introduction to some of our first classroom materials; pencils, scissors, glue, and art paper. Our classroom environment is beginning to grow.
Continuing our learning about shapes, I introduced our first math manipulative; pattern blocks. We named the shapes, talked about what the children noticed about the different shapes, and learned about shape attributes through a hands-on exploration. At the end of our workshop, the children gathered around Crosby, as he shared about his "spiky boomerang". We named and counted the different shapes he used. Your child may be talking about rhombuses this weekend, as that was a new word for many of them!
