courage

This week we read a collection of story books about courage. The children had opportunities to share their ideas about courage, connect to the characters in our books, and tell about a time when they had courage. Starting Kindergarten, making new friends, learning routines, exploring, creating, representing, and growing takes courage.

I connected our conversations about courage to making kind and responsible choices. It takes courage to be kind - to make choices that help your community or support the learning happening in your classroom. It takes courage to be responsible and follow directions, take care of your space, be a peer. It is more powerful to make a choice that helps our learning and supports our community. Courage is something we can share.

But, what does kind mean to the children? What does being responsible mean?

The children's work this week provided a meaningful opportunity to introduce our community bands. As a PBIS school we use colorful bands to recognize when children are making safe, kind, or responsible choices. In Kindergarten we call these bands "community bands", because the choices we make as individuals impact our whole community. You may hear your child talk about community bands at home. It is important that the empowerment and pride they feel is about the choices they made, not the colorful band they received. Our conversations and reflections will continue to support this concept.

What do you know about the word COURAGE?

Dylan - Courage means, I CAN DO IT.

Amelia - Courage is community bands and being kind.

Grace - Courage gives you the power to do anything, even when you think you can't.

Tell about a time you had courage...

Following our read aloud Courage the Kindergarteners took a few minutes to turn and talk with a peer. The prompt; share about a time you had courage. Following their turn and talk, JP shared his story with all of us;

One time, at Santa's Village, my sister was feeling scared about going to see Santa. So, I just went, and then my sister wasn't scared. I had to have courage to see Santa!"

Sometimes we have courage for others.

Kindergarteners think about being kind and being responsible. They use pictures and words to show their thinking - just like writers do! It takes courage to represent your ideas and make your ideas visible.
