On Friday, October 5th, we collected leaves on the trails around our school. The children spent our outdoor classroom time working in partnerships, in search of the most colorful leaves. I pressed the leaves over the weekend and shared our collection with the children on Monday afternoon, asking the question; How many leaves did we collect?
We sorted, counted, and recorded how many leaves of each color as well as how many leaves in all. Through this meaningful experience, children developed their one-to-one correspondence skills, practiced recording numbers, compared amounts, and discussed noticings about our information. We talked about how a graph is another way to show data or information - together we developed our first graph.
