scrolls in the loft

On Monday the overhead projector in our loft became a space for writing scrolls, from all-about scrolls to true stories! We had previously used the projector as a space to build letters using straight and curved colorful lines as well as natural materials. Now, our literacy loft has been full of conversation, planning, writing and drawing.

Using strips of clear plastic (left over from recent laminating) and wet erase markers, the authors have stretched their books across clear scrolls to then pull across the projector. As they slowly pull their scrolls across, their writing is projected on to the wall.

During academic choice, if you choose to "watch" a scroll story, simply look up to the loft and see a child's work projected on to the wall!

During our share following academic choice, Dylan told his true scroll story about the time he got a new toy and James shared his how-to love scroll. All of the children have been waiting eagerly for their turn to write scrolls in the loft!

While this experience occurs outside of our writing workshop, it is an authentic writing experience in which children are using all that we've learned about planning and writing a literary piece. There is a sense of joy, curiosity and wonder, as students demonstrate the transferring of skills and strategies.

This experience is an example of why academic choice is the richest and most loved part in our day!
